Oil and Gas Engineering

This page describes the work performed by the Engineering Design firm during the different stages of the Engineering phase of a typical project in the Oil and gas industry.


Front End Engineering Design (FEED) / Basic Engineering


FEED/Basic Engineering Studies for a brownfield project shall include situations like:
  • Studies for modifications/upgrade of existing installations and facilities.
  • Studies for Installations of additional equipment on existing facilities.

The following activities would typically be performed by the engineering company:
  • Preparation of Basis of Design (BOD) for Basic Engineering and Deliverables List or Masters Deliverable Register (MDR) which lists all the expected deliverables.
  • Preparation of Contract Co-ordination Procedure.
  • Development of calculations notes for completing the mechanical and hydraulic definition of the PLANT.
  • Preparation and issuance of requisitions for equipment and material procurement for Long Lead Items (LLIs).
  • Preparation and issuance of Approved for Design (AFD) or Issue for Tender (IFT) drawings, specifications and procedures.
  • Preparation of preliminary studies, calculations and drawings for heavy lifts, load-out, seafastening and transportation of equipment including modules, skids, etc... if required.
  • Preparing rigging studies as required.
  • Preparing transportation studies as required.
  • Development of preliminary systems definitions for pre-commissioning, commissioning and startup if required.
  • Preparation of preliminary pre-commissioning and commissioning procedures.
  • Preparation/or update of operating manuals to be further developed during EPCI if required.
  • Preparation of Weight control report.
  • Access/handling and maintenance study.
  • Maintaining and operating an adequate system of control of availability of drawings andspecifications at their latest revision at all places where WORK is performed.
  • Conducting of  HAZOP review and follow-up implementation of recommendations into the design.


Detailed Engineering


Detailed Engineering for brownfield project shall include:
  • Preparation of Basis of Design (BOD) for Detailed Engineering and Deliverables List or Masters Deliverable Register (MDR) which lists all the expected deliverables.
  • Preparation of Contract Co-ordination Procedure.
  • Updating of calculations for completing the mechanical and hydraulic definition of the
  • PLANT if required.
  • Preparation and issuance of requisitions for equipment and material procurement and construction subcontracts.
  • Preparation and issuance of Approved for Construction (AFC) drawings, specifications and procedures.
  • Provision of all necessary copies of engineering documents required by the commissioning team, spare parts team, and the like.
  • Review and updating calculations and drawings for heavy lifts, load-out, sea-fastening and transportation of equipment including modules, skids, etc.
  • Update /or Preparing rigging studies as required.
  • Preparing transportation studies as required.
  • Development of systems definitions for pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up.
  • Preparation of pre-commissioning and commissioning procedures.
  • Preparation/update of operating manuals.
  • Issuance of requisition and drawings/documents status reports and engineering progress reports.
  • Update Weight control report.
  • Preparation of Access and maintenance study report.
  • Assisting COMPANY with the technical reviews as required.
  • Procurement Support including provision of technical solutions to queries issued by equipment vendors.
  • Precommissioning/Commissioning studies, including the following:
  • (a) Development of system definitions for pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up
    (b) Commissioning sequence definition with respect to start-up priorities and incentives/handover milestones
    (c) Definition of pre-commissioning and commissioning procedures principles (witnessing, hand-over, Certificates, punch lists)
    (d) List of major Equipment Operational Tests with acceptance criterion definition
    (e) Preparation of PID/OLD color marked up
    (f) Pre-commissioning and commissioning preparation evaluation with planning resources and deliverable schedule

Field or Follow-on Engineering


Field Engineering usually takes place at the construction site or fabrication yard after Detailed Design, and it includes:
  • Clarification and interpretation of detailed engineering documents.
  • Development of solutions to field-encountered problems (such as interferences or clashes).
  • Development of input to as-built drawings and documentation
  • Preparation of pre-commissioning and commissioning documentation and dossiers.

  

Construction Engineering

Although this is usually performed by the Contruction Company or fabrication yard, Engineering Companies may be required to perform Construction Engineering activities such as:
  • Review and update of all Detailed Engineering deliverables required for Construction.
  • Provision of Fabrication, Construction and hook-up drawings.
  • Development of Construction Method Statement and Installation Plans,
  • Development/Update of all required Specifications and Procedures.
  • Development/update of required Requisitions and datasheets.
  • Comprehensive compilation of all quality Records and vendors deliverables.
